Mission
The Pickerel Lake Conservancy’s mission is to protect the water quality, natural resources and ecosystems of Pickerel Lake, Day County, South Dakota, and the surrounding watershed by promoting conservation, research and education so the natural beauty and environment of the lake and surrounding area may be preserved for the enjoyment of people today and for generations to come.
Pickerel Lake History
Formed by the glaciers over 10,000 years ago, our watershed is comprised of 19,000 acres. At its heart, the 955 acre Pickerel Lake bears the American Indian name meaning “where you spear long fish”. This area, stretching along the Coteau des Prairies, is home to native grass lands supporting rare plant and animal species uniquely suited to our climate.
